Unequal Opportunity

Opportunity is the seed of progress. In order to move forward in any context, there must be an open door to walk through.

Everyone has experienced some form of privilege and inequity in their lifetime; whether you are man, woman, African American, Caucasian, Native American, English speaking, Spanish speaking, or anything in between.

There is no such thing as an equal opportunity. Far greater than the inequality, however, is each individual's unique offerings. We are not better than the next person, we are simply different.

In this episode of Success Unbound, I share a poem from my Inspiring Words series of books. The poem is titled Unequal Opportunity.

When you begin to fall into the trap of victimization, remember this: Unequal as an opportunity may be, it is still YOUR opportunity.

Transforming Pain into Value

When I survived the feeling of being ostracized, I was able to see my own self-worth. My own humanity. It was here, in this place, where I saw how easy it is to dehumanize the oppressor. This poem is not only about me, the invisible, but also the need to regard ALL others as fully human. Yes, even those that may ignore you and me.

Here is where that messy grace comes in. Dehumanization is a real issue facing our modern life, but it is not a given destiny. Poetry gave me the ability to see a human face in the moon, in the clouds, in streams and trees. Personifying every part of the world– both the things that hurt and please me, gave me the ability to see humanity in those that ignored me. This, this is power.

“Rather than looking for explanations for why all people deserve to be treated with compassion and respect, we ought to be working at creating a world in which people are treated with compassion and respect. Human rights aren’t lying around waiting to be discovered. They’re made, not found.” ― David Livingstone Smith

Why I Do What I Do

Are you giving life all you’ve got?—If you’re not, you’re missing out. This life is a special thing. A truly unique trip-through the universe that isn’t going to happen again.

In a world that’s beset with challenges, inequities, and tragedies, it can be easy to lose sight of life’s specialness. It can be easy to lose energy, steam, and enthusiasm—to lose the zest for living that makes little children jump out of bed in the morning ready to take on the day.

The key to overcoming these lulls and lows lies in your Why.

Why you do what you do.

Each of us must find our Why and channel it every day.

The Why is your dose of daily inspiration and motivation. A carrot that keeps you moving forward in the face of doubt, uncertainty, exhaustion, and defeat.

Today, on Success Unbound, we’re going to highlight the importance of channeling this Why

  • Why you do what you do?
  • Why you feel what you feel?
  • Why you think what you think?
  • And more…

Go ahead and finish this sentence:

I do what I do, because I know what it feels like to…

Do it now, because I’d love to hear why you do what you do.
